Freight Traffic Around "MH" Tower (Chicago)

 Although by a wide margin, the predominant rail traffic viewed here at "MH" is of the passenger variety, with Metra and Amtrak holding center stage, a sizable number of freight movements are also seen on a typical day. All the bulk unit train traffic (coal, oil, grain) and associated empties exchanged between BNSF and Norfolk Southern pass by "MH," along with a pair of scheduled merchandise trains between the two railroads. Additionally, Union Pacific often pulls cuts of intermodal cars out the east end of their Global One facility, using the St. Charles Air Line to switch intermodal traffic. Finally, Canadian National operates occasional unit coal trains off BNSF to and from Consumers Energy at Essexville MI. All in all, an average day will see 10-12 freight moves pass through.
