Eastern Railroad Discussion > Oil Cans and Intermodal Trains on CN's Mississippi MainlineDate: 02/08/20 16:00 Oil Cans and Intermodal Trains on CN's Mississippi Mainline Author: Vicksburg_Route This afternoon, I had the opportunity to spend about an hour at Valley Siding on the CN's former Illinois Central, ex-Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Chicago to New Orleans mainline today.
Valley Siding is just south of Yazoo City, Mississippi and is 11,700 feet long. It was lengthened in the late 1970s / early 1980s by connecting the original Valley Siding with Crupp Siding, a mile or so to the north. Image 1 - Southbound Oil Can arrives at South Valley behind CN 3906 and CN 3000 Image 2 - Northbound Oil Can behind KCS 4719 and two CN Units arrive and meets the Southbound Oil Can. Image 3 - After the meet, Southbound Oil Can departs South Valley Image 4 - Southbound Chicago to New Orleans intermodal train Q194 powered by CN 2342 and another CN unit arrives South Valley immediately after departure of the Southbound Oil Can. Does Q194 usually run that short down there? Does CN fill it out with other freight?

Most of the time, CN adds manifest tonnage to match the horsepower available. It is unusual to see a solid intermodal train this short.

Just to add, the lion's share of Q194 / Q195's intermodal traffic out of Chicago is to / from Memphis. As pictured, just a relatively small amont continues to Jackson, MS and New Orleans. The manifest traffic is tacked on at Memphis' Harrison Yard. Andrew Date: 02/09/20 14:26 Re: Oil Cans and Intermodal Trains on CN's Mississippi Mainline Author: ns1000 My favorite is Pic 3!!
