Eastern Railroad Discussion > Reading and Northen derailment??Date: 02/09/20 13:41 Reading and Northen derailment?? Author: dschlegel I just saw an article on WFMZ.com stating that there is a derailment in Nesquehoning, PA involving 4 rail cars. I assume this would be a Reading and Northern train, but there’s very little detail in the article.
Does anyone have more information? Thanks, Dan Posted from iPhone Date: 02/09/20 14:32 Re: Reading and Northen derailment?? Author: pal77 Isn’t that where the new bridge is?

Rear end of NRFF, 6 cars involved, 2 boxes, several covered hoppers. Happened at N. Mermon Ave. grade crossing. No haz-mat, clean up in progress No BFD, really. Date: 02/09/20 15:28 Re: Reading and Northen derailment?? Author: dschlegel bigsavage Wrote:

Date: 02/09/20 18:33 Re: Reading and Northen derailment?? Author: pdt No BFD compared to what it could have been...but still an expensive, time consuming distraction...

Looks like videographer was fortunately zooming in as opposed to standing right next to the tracks. Was it the 1st covered hopper of the last batch of covered hoppers went off the rails first? Date: 02/10/20 04:52 Re: Reading and Northern derailment?? Author: PlyWoody And never get near a bent rail that can spring free and kill you, just like in this photo. Stay clear as there are many hazards you do not know and can kill you. Dozer operators have a cage on their machine to help protect them but a bent rail can spring loose at any time, even when being cut with a torch to prevent the hazard. Sometime a door can fall off a derailed car account a shifted load and the door has crushed many men. Study the rail head way prior to the point of derailment for clues of dragging equipment to discover the cause but stay clear of the wreck.

Probably dates from x-CNJ days. No further comment so as not to offend the squeamish or OCD-afflicted, Thomas Howell pics from Friends of the R&N FB site. I didn’t intend to start a safety briefing. Dan Date: 02/10/20 08:36 Re: Reading and Northern derailment?? Author: mp208 looks like a wheel(s) dropped inside wide gauge before the rail broke. Look at the spike heads

Date: 02/10/20 10:19 Re: Reading and Northern derailment?? Author: boejoe Glad no injuries to crew or locals. Glad no passenger run involved (with 425!)

Was it the > 1st covered hopper of the last batch of covered > hoppers went off the rails first? The photographer was NOT zooming in. He was right at the gate! He had God with him as he very easily could have been struck by an errant rail or a wheel or other debris like a friggin freightcar gone wild!!! Great footage but kinda foolish to be that close to a derailment in progress. SantaFeRuss |
