FP7A returns to the rails to haul freight in northern Michigan.
Author: NS270

ELS 600 was built in January 1951 for the Milwaukee Road as number 96A. It had been out of service for the past 8 years, but was again put up to the task of hauling freight on the Escanaba & Lake Superior ex Milwaukee Road trackage between Pembine Wisconsin and Channing, MI. I have included photos of them moving storage cars on the old Republic / Champion line in Channing, MI, passing the old Milwaukee Road Depot in Iron Mountain, and coming into the north end of Pembine with a road freight. The 600 suffered a problem with the air compressor shortly after my visit and is currently out of service awaiting repair.

It sure is amazing to see an old F pulling freight anywhere in 2020, but combine the majesty of the Northwoods and the fact that she is on home ex Milwaukee rails, and you have nothing short of a dream.

Nice to see an F-unit without ditch lights.  The colors remind me of R.J.Corman or maybe the Branson Railroad.

Great photos. I also was reminded of the RJ Corman colors when I saw this. I hope 600 is repaired soon and resumes operations.

Colors are the same as the Wisconsin Southern RR where the 600 spent some time.

Go to Youtube.com and plug in "escanaba & lake superior 600."  You'll enjoy listening to the horns.

A little Leslie Tyfon A-200 for you. The S5T needs attention badly. Happy to see her out after such a long slumber though!

Here are some roster style shots for your enjoyment. You can see the brand new stainless steel grille(s) in the side shot.

Seeing the exhaust stack on the rear of the loco, it was once-upon-a-time equipped with a HEP set for commuter service.  I will assume the HEP was removed?

The HEP generator and Cummins engine are still intact but not being used at this time.

Did the 600 belong to the Wisconsin Southern in recent years? The paint scheme looks the same.

Go to You Tube -  in the search box type in: THIS RESTORED EMD FP7A LOCOMOTIVE IS BACK IN SERVICE! (2020) ... and the S5T sounds like it either "has a cold or flu" or needs to be serviced. But the horn package on the EMD FP7A is still... LOUD!

The YT poster is Jason Asselin. He lives in the U.P. and posts several videos a month on E&LS

I wonder if he had those made custom, of if somehow they are still available new from Farr, or whoever Farr is these days.
