Just this NS service alert http://www.nscorp.com/content/nscorp/en/shipping-tools/shipping-news-and-alerts/service-disruption-at-hoosac-tunnel-on-pan-am-southern-.html
Edit: Finally a story out there. https://www.wwlp.com/news/local-news/berkshire-county/hoosac-tunnel-out-of-service-for-structural-evaluation/ Edited 1 time(s). Let's face it, the tunnel is almost 150 years old and is not going to last forever. I hope this is minor, but only time will tell.

The dimensions of that tunnel look too tight for a tunnel that was once double track but looks like the clearance were improved simply by undercutting the already single tracked tunnel. I simply cant imagine two trains meeting in that tunnel in steam days. Even with the electric locos that pulled the trains thru, it must have a dark and spooky ride. A friend of mine walked thru it alone years back and somehow climbed up into the air shaft in a brick structure in the middle of the tunnel. He said the little brick structure had a sign naming it the hoosac hotel (if memory serves.) Not for the faint of heart!

- Mining firm to inspect tunnel on Thursday to get a handle on scope and duration of repair - Train detours to last through Monday at a minimum: the first westbound 11R detour, led by B40s MEC 5973-5943-5974, was routed out of E Deerfield Yard up the Conn River line to Bellows Falls last night around 6pm and departed BF on the Vermont Rail System around 9pm. Once at Rutland consist will be taken down to Hoosac Jct to get back on Pan Am Southern to proceed west to Mechanicville/Binghamton. I expected that, but as of yesterday afternoon, no plans in place. this will be interesting to watch. The tunnel has had clearances changed twice, once by grinding the roof and the other time by undercutting the tracks. The state wants to under cut it again to make room for double stacked domestic containers, but now I can see questions raised about the future of the tunnel. While the tunnel opened in 1875, construction started in 1851! Like I said before, the tunnel is old and is not going to last forever. Date: 02/13/20 09:56 Re: Minor collapse in Hoosac Tunnel Author: PlyWoody It a little confusing but the Junction where the Vermont RR track extends from North Bennington to join the Pan Am Southern in Hoosick Jct , N,Y just north of Hoosick Fall, NY (known forever for PFOA) is where the former B&M follows the Hoosic River. It is in the town of Hoosick Falls. The Tunnel is spelled Hoosac without a i or a k involved.
PFOA is cancer causing chemical that does not break down, same as PCB, and got in the ground water supply of the town, causing cancer in residents in Hoosick Falls, NY.
