Today I headed up to Mansfield to catch the Ashland Railway's Willard turn. The train runs Monday and Thursday and today left town around 8am. The line is 10mph all the way to Willard. The weather was complete crap, but I haven't been out in 2 weeks so it didn't bother me at all. Power for the train today was ASRY's pair of 64 year old high hood GP10s which were built for the PRR in 1954. The train was mostly steel coils and a few boxcars on the rear. They arrived in Willard at 1030 where they made their moves to get into the yard. Enjoy!

I really think that the crap weather made for better pictures.  I don't think bright sunny days would have been as striking.  You did a great job in lensing those.  Black and white units on a black and white day.  I bet they sounded good too.

I'm a sucker for fog shots.  The approaching Plymouth is fantastic!

ASRY 30, here as CR GP10 7576 at Conrail's Bayview Yard (Harrisburg Div) on 10/24/1987. Built in 1956, it's the former PRR/PC/CR GP9 7056. It retained its high short hood when rebuilt for Conrail at Paducah in 1978.

were in those geeps. Looked Nathan P5 with all bells facing forward.

Great stuff.    Doubleheaded high hood 1st gen geeps, back to back, long hood fwd, as they were originally meant to run.  Shades of the PRR, NYC, EL.

Ive always wanted to have a "no wide cabs" thread..  Current stuff, but what many of us would consider classic engine types.. Or maybe, just like there is a steam thread, have a 1st gen diesel thread.

Can you share who is the shipper and receiver for this train of steel coils. This is a fascinating operation with almost NO visibiity outside of local Ohio fans.
 

Very nice. These units were purchased from AVR several years ago and its great to see them in new paint. Some oldies:
1. 1801 is the middle unit on this empty hopper train emerging from Glenshaw tunnel back in August 2006.
2 & 3: AVR 1802 and 1801 are staged and ready to depart the property in November of 2006, having been replaced by an influx of GP11's and SD40-2s to the railroad.

Very interesting post--who is getting all the steel??

The line looks to have lots of welded rail--I wonder if they could squeeze 20 mph speeds out of it??
