Eastern Railroad Discussion > Upbeat "News" re: Hoosac Tunnel rehabDate: 03/25/20 03:15 Upbeat "News" re: Hoosac Tunnel rehab Author: JPB Here's some upbeat news: In a 3/23 Service Alert update, NS says it plans to re-institute the Chicago-Ayer intermodal lane roughly around the end of March upon completion of Hoosac Tunnel rehab. Related to this, I queried the Pan Am discussion form on railroad.net whether rehab work was continuing despite Covid-19 edicts and here was one reply from Tuesday 3/24/20: "The Tunnel work and the railroads in general are also covered as being essential to National Defense. So the work will continue. I heard they finally hit daylight last week and that the pile of debris to be excavated off the tracks is down to about 8 feet high." So it sounds like progress is being made.

No, it's just excavating and stabilizing the area where the collapse occurred, and I can't imagine it would be sound engineering to leave such an area exposed when they're done. Repair to a tunnel collapse isn't something particularly suitable for postponement. You may have been thinking of something else.
