D&H Land - Close to Home
Author: train1275

It's nice having the railroad literally in the back yard and makes for a nice hit and run strategy keeping rather close to home.

1. I have not had much luck getting anything decent at Sidney, NY, once the realm of both D&H and NYO&W. Back then the photographic possibilities where endless. But now it is tight and you have to get creative. Here is Train 30T coming through town yesterday 4-4-20. I was there it and it was there is about all I can say. Power was NS 7525 and 9887 approaching Main Street.

2. The going away shot. Just this side of the crossing in the distance is where the NYO&W had the diamond across the D&H (GX). 30T has no worries that the O&W will stick it to them today !

3. This is what it looked like in 1957 with O&W 805 coming north across the GX diamond  - David Connor photo

Neat O&W photo!

And yes it is nice living close to a railroad when you need a train fix.

Thankfully NS usually runs at least one train while I walk my dogs each night, and thankfully walking dogs is still allowed in Pennsylvania provided social distancing is practiced.

Practicing social distancing is easy when you have two beagles that howl and carry on whenever anyone is within a block of me!!

This morning - April 5, 2020 Train 23K comes south with NS 9232 and 9461 as seen on the south end of Sidney at MP 576. The rear of the train would be crossing the O&W. That is the same hillside in the background as seen in the 1957 O&W view.

Next we get 23K at MP 595 at Pratt Road crossing, Harpursville as he makes his way to Binghamton.

And the going away at Pratt Road with J.B. Hunts  - weird to see doublestacks here on 23K as this was until a few days back Train 205.

Next up is Train 11R at Bainbridge, NY. Reportedly this was the first 11R through the repaired Hoosac Tunnel ending the lengthy detours over the old Rutland.
Power is NS 1191, 5618 and 1100.

Old Warrior 5618 -  built April 1979 - in consist of 11R.

After 11R, then comes 30T seen here at MP 565 just north of Wells Bridge, NY with NS 8091 and 1057.

Late in the afternoon Train 16R comes north as seen from the old bridge at Cooperstown Junction. Power is NS 1116, 9852 and 7659.

And a nicely lit going away shot ends the day and the weekend.

That 3rd photo is both lovely and a marvel. If it is truly from March, 1957 it was the month that the "Old Woman" was ordered to shut down....and yet how good looking the power still is.

The D&H - O&W then and now photo set is awesome! It's hard to believe such a junction ever existed today.

With the help of Google Maps and Historic Aerials, I was able to find the path of the NYO&W in Sidney on a current map. On the west side (compass bearing) of the town, a bridge pier is still in the Susquehanna River. On the east side, the NYO&W right of way is more clear on a satellite view running along E Railroad St.

Photo #3 is superb. Looking at Historic Aerials, most of the D&H trackage and all of the NYO&W had disappeared by 1982. The joint passenger station is long gone as well.

That O&W shot was taken in the final days of the railroad, which shut down at the end of March 1957, the month the photo was taken. Note the very short train.

I believe the photo was taken March 25, 1957, four days before the shut down.

Great shots but the O&W is a beauty....Are the first two photos on NS in the same area?   After deregualtion so much infrastructure has been lost.... Holy Smokes.
