NS, Delaware Lackawanna, Reading & Northern around Scranton 4/06
Author: sscannella

Though you all might enjoy a break from COVID-19 and take in a tour of the rail activity around Scranton, PA on Monday 4/6.  I'll start with NS local K81, based out of Taylor Yard, looking like a Canadian Pacific train (remember CP vacated the former D&H lines in PA and a large part of NY about 4 1/2 years ago).  It looks like CP must owe NS some horsepower hours, because CP units have been consistently assigned between Binghanton, NY and Taylor over the past week or so, including the 7010, which I unfortunately missed I was in the area in between it between days it was working Taylor (it was back at Binghamton on Monday, but came back down to Taylor Tuesday morning.)  Nonetheless I got a good dose of CP power back in the area, first from the Rt 11 bridge in Avoca near Dupont Jct, then of the K81 working the interchange with the Luzerne and Susquehanna in Avoca.

After finishing their work at Avoca they headed back to Taylor with the two units bracketing a single car.  I then captured them a bit later ted up for the day awaiting use by the K82 turn to Binghamton

One more look at the PO74 at Pocono Summit.   They had no loads for the grain mill, but switched out Bestway Lumber in Cresco and then pulled empties at the mill.  The empties were then stored on the siding at Moscow, and they returned lite to Scranton and tied up.

Back in Scranton, the other crew finished up their work on the Carbondale Line and headed over to Taylor with just-released ex-Wabash C424 2409.   With no inbounds for the NS, they made a quick turn-around and return to Scranton with 8 cars, and then set up with one lumber load to run north on the Carbondale Line first thing in the morning .

The Reading and Northern Scranton Branch job was finishing up working the Kane Distribution warehouse, and is seen heading back through the Stauffer Industrial Park to Taylor Yard, which they need to pass through to get to the former DL&W Bloom branch and their yard at Pittston, PA.

Once the PISB passed through Taylor, there was a lull in activity until the NS's daily Enola, PA to Binghamton, NY manifest 14R showed up.  With the recent abolishment of Allentown freights 36T / 37T, 14R (and counterpart 11Z) have picked up much of that traffic and have gotten rather large and heavy.  Usually 14R rates three NS units up front, but when train length and tonnage get large, the third unit is often placed in a mid-train DPU position for better handling on the grades coming up out of the Susquehanna valley to Binghamton, as seen here.

I'll finish up with this video of the 14R, starting up the Clarks Summit grade at MP 671 / Lackawanna Ave in Scranton.

Everyone stay safe, and stay healthy; and hopefully we're all thru this crisis in the not too distant future.

Thanks for your photos and videos.  In this one of the Reading you can see that the railroad has done some re-ballasting and the track from that point really looks great, but before that, you wonder what keeps the train on that track.

The ex-Wabash is said to be going into corporate GVT colors.

Is the 3007 an ex- BN LMX unit, or have they just applied a similar paint job? Looks nice.
