Old roadnames on a CN grain train
Author: inCHI

The other week I saw a southbound grain train on CN's Chicago Sub passing through Hyde Park in Chicago (MP 7) that had an interesting mix of cars. Most of the grain car sets on CN that I've seen are a bland mix of gray private reporting marks. This one instead had mostly CN cars, showing paint schemes from CN, IC, ICG, GT, MN&S, RI, and more. The photos aren't the best, but could still be handy for weathering purposes. A trio of SD75I's lead it.

I really messed this up for how interesting this string of cars was - ICG, MN&S, and GT PS 4750's. It's amazing that the MN&S cars are still around; I saw another one on another CN train recently.

Another old catch - an IC ex-RI Thrall 4750. And another IC Thrall 4750, can't tell what it used to be under all the rust, but the number series seems to also be ex-RI

More IC cars, original and secondhand:
IC(G) 4750. Funny how the fading matches the reporting mark change.
IC all gray
IC gray with red showing through, wonder what that used to be.

Of the two types of newer (90's) IC cars, the NSC 5150's seem to look pretty good. The other type, Trinity 5161's, really get rusty, as shown in the second photo.
And, a fresher looking ICG CN repaint.

Some GT PS 4750's, showing a lot of wear, and a GTW repaint.

CN's Canadian Wheat Board cars display a wide variety of wear, shown here from best to worst:

-Surprisingly vivid and intact
-Very weathered but the logo still stands out
-Even more weathered

Lastly -

An interesting Canadian CN car
"Lafey Rouse Grain Corp"
"NAHXCN" is what the reporting mark looks like with NAHX showing through the patch

Hopefully I'll catch a set like this again in good light soon.

Wow---it's hard to imagine those GTW cars were blue at one time!

For modeling purposes the light is just right.  If it had been sunny the shadows would have covered up the details.  I like the post even though I'm a tank car junkie, lol.

I'm guessing with CN and CP moving record amounts of grain that these cars were pulled from storage? It reminds me of some rag-tag CR coal trains using near end of life Reading, E-L and other predecessor road's hoppers.

Very cool mix of cars!  I've seen the Delaware Lackawnna (based in Scranton, PA) have several Rock Island cars the past several weeks.
