Eastern Railroad Discussion > CSX Rail Train Pull ApartDate: 05/16/20 19:04 CSX Rail Train Pull Apart Author: K8DTI CSX W018-07 had a wee mishap at Hamilton, Ohio this afternoon. With a loaded rail train up front and a loaded ballast train on the rear, the weakest link was found climbing the grade out of Hamilton, Ohio toward Indianapolis. I'm sure this sounded spectacular. Amtrak is annulled for Sunday and cleanup is proceeding.

Date: 05/16/20 19:18 Re: CSX Rail Train Pull Apart Author: stevelv It looks to me like a a separation of welded rail cars. I would have never imagined that the rail would end up like that though.

They're lucky it didn't happen on the busier Cincinnati Terminal Subdivision! Date: 05/17/20 00:30 Re: CSX Rail Train Pull Apart Author: Bunny218 That is truly a great capture of something you never see. And an expensive "malfunction" for CSX, but fortunately no injury or loss of life.
Date: 05/17/20 05:03 Re: CSX Rail Train Pull Apart Author: alco244 same thing happened about 18 years ago in the D&H south of binghamton, rail train with 6000 tons tied on, locomotives started jumping on a greaser, than the fun started.

Randy Lundgren Elgin, TX Date: 05/17/20 05:32 Re: CSX Rail Train Pull Apart Author: PlyWoody Equally as bad is to remove too many spikes in advance when you are pulling up welded rail and loading it into a CWR train to abandon the line (Grand Canyon of PA) and when train about full, the entire train derails as it turned the loose rail on its side under the train. The entire loaded train had every wheel on the ground. A wrecking contraction had to jack up ever truck and set the rail back under the wheels and secure the rails with gauge bars. Well, this did not delay any other trains,
Date: 05/17/20 06:48 Re: CSX Rail Train Pull Apart Author: tronarail Bad Day Indeed. However, just to make it clear to me, is this one rail transport car that actually "pulled apart" or is it a coupler failure between two cars? Thank you.
Date: 05/17/20 07:22 Re: CSX Rail Train Pull Apart Author: nm2320 two cars separated.
Date: 05/17/20 07:25 Re: CSX Rail Train Pull Apart Author: halfmoonharold Many MoW cars are way overage, since they don't ever go offline. Rail trains often have drawbars between cars, could have just rusted out. Not a very good idea to tie any tonnage behind one, though.
