Does anyone know what purpose they serve or what they are used for?

Am surprise to see that they are
sub letter with a Southern number and not NS.

From what I was told  they serve as an internal materials handling car for the purpose of hauling company material for recycling. NS recycles tie plates and other track materials at its Roanoke shops. The one I saw was NS boxcar 403025MW seen here in Columbia, PA back on November 26th, 2016.

As far as I know the workman work out of these cars with whatever material they have
I have pictures of the cars with the doors open and will get them reay and post also

The cars appear to have kept their numbers when they were turned green.
