A few from Berea Ohio today-old boxcars and NS 8025 MGA
Author: WLE2679

We haven't taken any train photos since late Feb, so my dad and I went to Berea for a bit today.   CSX was closed down at the time for trackwork.

An empty work-rail train heads west with an SD60E and some older boxcars.

Not sure if this is a 40 footer?    206 sneaks up on us.

For box cars produced over a fairly long period, it was pretty safe with a view angle like this to count the roof panels in profile-- 12 on this one (40') vs. 15 for a 50'

Why did they do away with 40 footers?  Couldn't they be useful for smaller loads to a consignee?

Technically yes, but:

1. Railroads are trying to do away with these small customers.
2. The continual cost of running a 40ft box vs. a 50/60ft box is negligible. Might as well go with the more useful bigger box.
3. These customers are likely better served by truck/intermodal.
