Busy Day in D&H Land
Author: train1275

Saturday June 27, 2020

It was a busy day in D&H Land but things were a little out of whack from the norm. Not sure why. Normally 22K comes by at 0-dark-30 and it was about 10:21 this morning. 23K is a mid morning train and it was around 3pm and he was still up on the CP at Clifton Park. The 23K met the 16R at West Richmondville and the 11R was sitting on the Hudson River bridge at Mechanicville at mid-afternoon and as of 11PM still has not sounded through Otego. Normally we would see him around supper time. 30T was about on schcedule. Oh, and it was really rainy today !

1. 30T with CN 5625, 8876 and NS 1139 slides down the hill near Schoharie Junction.

2. Up at Delanson is the 23K stopped and waiting to proceed possibly waiting for the 22K to get cleared. Power is NS 9195 and 1196.

3. NS 9607 sits at Delanson. When 23K comes down he will pick this unit up as his 3rd unit.

At CPF 477 - Waite Road, Clifton Park, NY the 23K is making it's way through the pouring rain between Mechanicville and Mohawk Yard Schenectady with NS 9776 and 9437. He is a monster 12,620 feet long. Just behind me is where the Pan Am (former B&M) branches off to head out to Rotterdam Junction. And on the CP a right turn will lead to Saratoga and a left to Schenectady and Binghamton.

Over at Mechanicville it is foggy on the Hudson River as Train 11R sits on the bridge, stopped at Noonans before heading into the yard.

We catch the 23K once again after he picked up his 3rd unit at Delanson and is on the grade coming out of Cobleskill at Warnerville Road near the site of Cherry Valley Junction. You can really get a good look at the grade here where in olden days the 4000 series RS-3's really barked and smoked.

A going away view of 23K on Richmondville Hill headed for a meet with 16R at West Richmondville.

23K passes the autoracks on 16R at West Richmondville and is about to duck under Route 7.

Now the 16R has a clear track to Mohawk Yard and rolls down hill at West Richmondville crossing with NS 9436, Pan Am 3403 and NS 4092.

A pan of Pan Am 3403 at West Richmondville on 16R.

Down the line at 8:02pm we catch the 23K once again at Emmons, NY just outside of Oneonta.

And at 8:17 pm a final shot of 23K along the Susquehanna at Otego.

NS owns the former D&H from Binghamton to Schenectady and CP owns everything north to the Canadian Border along with the Colonie Main Line to Albany.  East of Mechanicville, jointly owned by NS and B&M to Ayer where the intermodal and auto ramps are.

So was the monster 23K a combined 23K and 205?  Haven’t heard a 205 running on it’s own for a while now.

23K and 22K disappeared about the time of the Hoosac tunnel closure in February or thereabouts.
When the tunnel reopened 22K and 23K came back and 205 / 206 disappeared so yeah this is a combined train now running as 22K and 23K.

That shot of 23K on the grade is pretty neat! I bet those RS3’s left a big cloud of smoke hanging around for a while after they passed back in the day!
