This could be a natural fit with G&W’s St. Lawrence & Atlantic.

Edited to add: And NS could purchase full ownership in the Pan Am Southern line although I have my doubts current management could think that strategically.

Do regulators and/or public officials in New England really want Genesee & Wyoming to control that much more of the region's rail service?

Hopefully we'll see the end of a railroad named after a failed, bankrupted airline. Boston and Maine anybody??

Why not?  a hundred years ago, Boston & Maine controlled more than is now for sale, and there were fewer regulations?

How about Boston & Maine Central, the name the combined system should have had? Reporting mark could be BMEC...

Where'd "Guilford" come from, anyway?

Guilford was named after the town which Tim Mellon grew up in.

CP might be in an expanding mood and looking for ports on the Atlantic Ocean.

Forget who buys the Pan Am routes (But I'll bet $2 on NS buying PAS (ie, Ayer and west) and G&W buying PAR (ie, Worcester and northeast))!

Who gets Pan Am's excellent OCS equipment?  ;-)

NS will Immediately sell it.  Does G&W have something similar?  Gerry

Hopefully a railroad that wants to expand business and serve the customers...not some investors that just want to make a fast buck and leave rubble behind.....

Does NS already own part of Pan Am?

Indirectly, yes.

Norfolk Southern and Pan Am jointly own an LLC operating company which brands itself Pan Am Southern. The Boston & Maine, and Springfield Terminal also have interests in the deal.

Here's a 2009 STB directive  https://www.stb.gov/decisions/readingroom.nsf/WebDecisionID/39179

Good point - first order of business is to remove the “rubble” Pan Am leaves behind!

A set of F units painted up in Norfolk Southern scheme would look classy pulling the NS business train.

Oh, nevermind.

Is the former Wabash "Blue Bird" Vista Dome Coach sold separately?

Split Pan Am between Norfolk Southern and Canadian Pacific or Candian National and Norfolk Southern.

Norfolk Southern already owns half of the westend (West of Ayer) through the PanAm Southern.
