NS 777: Double Heritage last Sunday
Author: B-LineRailfan

Norfolk Southern train 777 was led by NS ES44ACs #8100 (Nickel Plate Road heritage unit) and #8104 (Lehigh Valley Railroad heritage unit) this past Sunday, August 2, 2020.  The Photo and video below show the train cresting Linden Hill on the NS B-line in Virginia.

Nice video.  First time I've ever seen a coal train of any sort on the B Line.  Is this any sort of a regular move up there now, or was this repositioning move of some sort?

Thank you,

Mike Derrick

These coal trains have been running from Shire Oaks to North Carolina for quite some time now.

When these trains run loaded east (776), two units typically lead, with two on the rear.  I presume rear units run as DPU's.  Am I correct ?

On empty returns, as photo shows, all units on head end.

Great photo, video of my two favorite heritage units.  Thanks

I think it's been a couple years now where they've been sending 740/741 and 780/781 across the B-line (I think they used to run through Ohio on their way to and from NC and western PA).  746/747 and 776/777 have normally been running the Valley line through Luray/Shenandoah but the empties have been heading back north through Lynchburg/Manassas and across the B-line fairly regularly lately (not sure if it's due to crew availability, etc.).
