MD/PA riding the Great Allegheny Passage
Author: Lackawanna484

Washington Post travel article about riding bikes, partly on the former Western Maryland right of way between Cumberland and Pittsburgh.

Railroad bridges, active rails, mileposts, coke ovens, etc

I rode from Frostburg to the Meyersdale Viaduct over the July 4th weekend.  About 20 miles worth.  Fantastic ride.

Its actually Great Allegheny Passage. We love the whole area and just came back from a weekend there at Confluence.

Big Savage Tunnel was a lot more exciting when it had tracks, and trains running through it...

Rode all 88 miles of the GAP in August.  I recommend the experience.  Beautiful rural countryside; nice gentle grade; nice B&Bs to stay at.

YIKES!  Based on the (assumed) superelevation, that must've been one helluva curve at the east end of Big Savage Tunnel!
