I'm a little late on posting these...three weeks ago I had the privilege to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony for Genesee Valley Transportation's new locomotive shop along the Delaware-Lackawanna railroad's Carbondale line, at the site of the former D&H Green Ridge Yard.  The new shop is named for the former Von Storch coal breaker. 

The shop replaces a much smaller shop erected back in the late 1980's by DL predecessor Lackawanna Valley Railroad in South Scranton, which will remain in use by the railroad for maintenance of way equipment.   Some of the features of the new shop include 2 - 200' servicing tracks, an 83' walk-in inspection pit, and a 20 ton overhead crane.  Units from sister GVT roads are cycled to Scranton whenever any heavy maintenance is required, which will be much convenient in the new facility.

The opening took place on Thursday, September 24, but some work took lace in the new shop prior to the ribbon cutting ceremony.  For instance, the DL's former Wabash C434, DL 2409, still in Wabash blue, was temporarily relettered in Wabash decals temporarily until the unit gets repainted in full GVT corporate colors.

I headed up north to Scranton Wednesday afternoon to catch the return trip of the DL's PO74 Pocono Line job, which ironically was led by the relettered Wabash unit, seen here at Tobyhanna, PA, and later emerging from Nay Aug tunnel in Scranton.  In the third picture, we see the new shop building from the Marion St footbridge in the Green Ridge section of Scranton, with four of the DL's heritage units on display on the eve of the ribbon cutting.

Here we see the crowd (all masked), gathered for the ceremony, with GVT President David J. Monte Verde delivering remarks to the gathered guests and dignitaries, including local Scranton area politicians.

One of the special invited guests was Jim Kilcullen, the last yardmaster at Green Ridge Yard before the D&H shut down the yard office in 1980.  (Jim also served as Yardmaster at several other D&H and later CP facilities in northeast PA and Binghamton, NY before his retirement.)

CMO Don Colangelo had the honors of cutting (breaking) the ribbon with DL's former Lehigh Valley C420 405, named in honor of one of GVT's founders, the late Chuck Riedmiller.

We also have a view of the overhead crane.

One last look inside the shop as guests were gathered and touring the DL's former EL business car #2.

In the afternoon, GVT officials and dignitaries took and inspection trip from Green Ridge to the end of the line at Carbondale and return, seen here at Jessup and Olyphant.

Wow, that's an impressive investment for the Genesee Valley Transportation in South Scranton, PA.  Good to see business car #2 getting some rail time.

Is #2 the former Erie Lackawanna Spirit of Youngstown?

If memory is correct, Spirit of Youngstown was a sleeper, not an observation car.

No.  EL #2 is a former Erie business car, later EL #2.  The Spirit of Youngstown was one of two 10-5 sleepers (the other being the Pride of Youngstown) ordered by the Erie in the mid-1950's for Chicago-Youngstown service.  The Spirit survivied the end of passenger service on the EL to remian with their modest business car fleet, going to Conrail and remaining today on CSX as the "Michael J. Ward".
