A Busy Morning
Author: ut-1

Mohawk, Adirondack & Northern's lines include the 45-mile Utica-Remsen-Boonville-Lyons Falls NY branch (ex-New York Central). Only the Utica-Boonville segment sees regular service as the 10-mile stretch between Boonville-Lyons Falls is used solely for car storage, usually from late winter to autumn (although the cars were pulled off the line a few months earlier this year).

About 7:30 am on October 21st, a seven-car MA&N freight (one covered hopper for a customer in Boonville and six cars carrying new ties for the Adirondack Railroad) departed the Utica yard. The tie cars, three gondolas and three hoppers, were set-off in Remsen, 21 miles from Utica, for pick-up by the Adirondack. Adirondack's home rails are reached about 2 miles north of the Remsen Depot at Snow Junction.

A major tie replacement project is underway on the Adirondack between Snow Junction (Remsen)-Big Moose-Tupper Lake, 84.5 miles. The long-dormant Big Moose-Tupper Lake section, 45 miles, is being upgraded to 45 MPH standards.

Sadly, while this work is proceeding, New York State is lifting the rails in the 34-mile stretch between Tupper Lake-Lake Placid for a trail.

We catch the northbound run in Trenton and Prospect. A look at the Remsen Depot is also provided, including views of the recently painted Pullman car, Glen Saddell.

Southbound, late morning, the Alco-powered freight (with three cars of telephone poles picked up from a customer in Boonville) is seen passing the cut of tie cars and, lastly, passing the same location shown in the video's opening..
