7 trains in 1 hour at Horningford, PA.
Author: bigsavage

Once the Juniata River fog burned off on 10/22/2020, we decided to stop at Horningford, MP 174.6 on NS's Pittsburgh line, just a few miles west of Lewistown, PA.
I had not been through this area since September 1998, back in the days of Conrail and film shooting.

First train at 10:36 a.m. was a westbound coal empty 591, and then a eastbound 294 moving slowly at 10:57. The dispatcher was using the crossovers at Long and Mifflin to route trains around active MOW. We missed another westbound in between these 2.

Beautiful photos from what I thought was my “secret spot”. ;-)

My grandparents had a cottage along the river at Horningford. It’s where my interest in railroads and trains began. Visited up there this past summer and sadly, it’s just not the same with the wayside signals gone.

Next train at 11:12 was Local C42 (Altoona-Lewistown) with 2 GP38-2s.
Heading westbound at 11:18 was 37A.

The eastbound Amtrak #42, the Pennsylvanian was next at 11:36.
Westbound 21J closed out the parade at 11:39.

This part of the Juniata River Valley is very attractive scenically.
A tent/RV campground operates here; see quietvalleycampground.com for details/rates.

You caught some really nice Autumn colors, particularly in the Pennsylvanian image.

Great photos! I’ve traveled 103 probably a dozen times from Lewistown to Mattawanna but never drove back to this spot. I definitely will the next time I’m out in that area.

You caught the C42 local on the day it goes to Mifflin, hence the empty gons for tie loading head out.
