This Budd's for you! R&N RDC Excursions
Author: tehachapi-dave

With the absence of the regular Fall Excursions on the Reading & Northern mainline due to the pandemic, the R&N has been operating their three BUDD RDCs on weekends between North Reading "Outer Station" and Jim Thorpe.  Here are a few shots from a chase last month, plus a shot of the railroads F units on a OCS trip to JT.  Enjoy!

Great pictures Dave.  Was the OCS trip on same day as the RDC's?  Scene looks identical as though not much passage of time.

Thanks for your video as it reminds me of the good-ole-days when the B&O was operating Budd Cars as part of their commuter train service.  And that office car train with the F units also looks great.  What a railroad.

That first video clip has the lead RDC smoking BIG time.  But apparently as the engine got warmed up, the diesel unit cleaned up its act.

Is this the last "main line" RDC excursion in North America?   Anywhere else you can ride 50 or miles in Budd Cars?  Great video thanks.

Conway Scenic in New Hampshire runs them, but they are shorter trips, I believe.

How about VIA's Sudbury to White River RDC run?  That's almost 400 miles.

Good call.  I thought that died a few years back but a quick Google search shows it very much alive as of last month.   That might be a post covid trip next summer.

It is a great trip.  The RDC's are full leaving Sudbury but it dwindles down to 2 or 3 passengers by th time you get to White River.

A cool, cool trip!

I grew up thinking that Budd cars came from the factory with scratched windows, peeling linoleum floors, and the faint smell of stale urine. All the Budds on B&M, PC, CNJ, and their successors came that way. VIA shows it doesn't have to be that way.

Neat seeing an RDC-4 on the road. Looks like it's baggage space was being put to good use.

Did other RDCs get the updated cab?
