Eastern Railroad Discussion > Alco S1 #5 Active in Upstate NYDate: 12/04/20 04:57 Alco S1 #5 Active in Upstate NY Author: CP4743 Former Alco Plant Switcher Alco S1 #5 is still active in Upstate NY working for a private owner. Please visit the Alco 5 page on Facebook for information and photos and consider supporting the preservation efforts for this historic locomotive. On a rainy October 26, 2020 Alco 5 is seen running NB light engine at Spier Falls Road in Greenfield, NY (just north of Saratoga, NY). It is headed to Corinth to switch out loaded stone hoppers in preperation for the final clean up of equipment left stranded on the former D&H Adirondack Branch when Iowa Pacific pulled out and went bankrupt. Since working at the Alco plant, Alco 5 has been used by GE at the former Alco plant in Schenectady after GE Power took over the facility for a few years after Alco closed. The unit then moved to private ownership visiting the Strasburg RR, working on the Adirondack Centennial RR (original Adirondack Scenic started on July 4, 1992), the D-L in Scranton, the Upper Hudson River RR out of North Creek, NY and finally the Saratoga & North Creek out of North Creek. The bankruptcy of Iowa Pacific stranded this unit on the Saratoga & North Creek and put its future at risk. But a local person stepped in and rescued the engine and is in the process of improving the mechanical and cosmetic condition of this fully operational locomotive.
