Odd that this story shows up shortly after the announcement of major cuts to the Keystone Service. Even his photo is posted backwards! Odd indeed!

These are all freight railroad investments,  To me this is the most interesting:


Delaware County:  

• CSX Transportation — $8.4 million to replace a tunnel to permit routing of double-stack container and multi-level auto rack traffic to/from Port of Philadelphia

"Tunnel" is in Darby Borough. There is a major crossroads and businesses above, I venture a guess it will be more than just a typical undercut.
This is the last double-stack barrier north of Baltimore. Everything else north to New Jersey and New York has already been done.

Tunnel clearance improvements in Delaware County PA? That sounds like the ex-B&O Boone Tunnel, between Darby and Sharon Hill just a mile or so beyond the city/suburban boundary with Philadelphia. CSX can't simply daylight the thing, because Chester Pike's very busy four lanes go right over the ridge which the railroad tunneled through. I wonder if the profile of the tunnel's roof will be carved-out, or under-cutting for the track bed, or some combination of both would be performed.

The state of PA announces grants like theis for RR projects every year, to support the state economy and jobs.  It mostly goes to shortline RR's.

Work on transfer tracks in Boyertown means there is pending freight service on the Colebrookdale RR.  This ex-reading branchline was almost abandoned, then saved for a tourist RR, and now looks lioke they will have some freight service.  This is great news.

This "tunnel" is more like a long road overcrossing than a tunnel.   I doubt there is much than can be done on the roof, as there is not mich above it.
But undercutting should be easy...I believe the ROW is 2 tracks wide there.

Isn’t there a bridge on this line that needs to be upgraded for heavier cars?
