Close to Home on a Saturday - 20 February 2021
Author: DTWilson

Since it was in the single digits and snow showers Saturday, we elected to stay close to home and see what CSX would run behind our house....

1) First off we catch Q317-20 at Dawson, MD coming west out of the Cumberland, MD terminal with a 189 car train.

2) Q317 arriving in Keyser, WV. They will reduce tonnage with a 112 car set out here. The tonnage reduction cars will go west later in B772, the Keyser to Grafton, WV local.

3) Q317 at West Keyser to start their set out as a snow squall starts....

.... More to Follow .....

2) SD50 in the power of Q317....

3) Next up is the 230 empty hopper train E750-18. While configured as 2+2 Distributed Power, the train will be split up at Keyser into two separate trains each with different destinations.

1) and 2) DP units in empty hopper train E750-18 at 21st. Bridge Road, MD. The DP units and 90 cars to their rear will become E737-20. The E737 crew is already on duty at Keyser waiting for the E750 to arrive. Once at Keyser, The E750 will pull west to allow the Conductor to cut the train in front of the DP units, hang a new EOT. Once the DP setup is cut out and the new EOT is tested, the E750 will continue west to Grafton.

3) 2 units and 90 cars lighter.... E750-18 westbound at Piedmont, WV with 125 empty cars heading for Grafton, WV.

... More to Follow ...

1) B772-20 returning east with 25 tonnage reduction cars from Grafton, WV that Q316 will pick up in Keyser the next morning.

2) and 3) The rear portion of E750 now with crewed as the E737-20 is westbound on the Interchange track at Piedmont, WV passing the B772. The 90 car E737 will head west on the Thomas Sub to load at the Mettiki Coal loadout.

Quick little afternoon on the Mountain Sub...

Thank You for having a look.

Good stuff! Thanks for posting.
I guess the 260 hopper train originated at the caol piers in Baltimore?
During the first week of Conrail I was having my lunch in my car (try this now!) trackside at ex-Conrail Abrams Yard, King of Prussia, PA, when an empty gondola train arrived eastbound and stopped at the yard office. One of the crew climbed down off the locos and while walking past a family in their car, also watching trains, and said to them, "We have 200 gondolas, you may never see a train that long again"! No one really thought EHH's PSR would come along and make double length trains common. I recently sat for ten minutes while one of those monster trains wandered through town at less than track speed (40 MPH).
