Derailment on NS Pittsburgh line
Author: Cole42

Hearing info on a derailment in Newport PA on the PITL, all tracks blocked.  I0w is apparently the train.  Don't know much else

A little more info, reading it happened in the interlocking at CP Port, about 15 cars but being an intermodal some are 3 well or 5 well so quite a bit to clean up.

Is it just me or is it a little strange that their source is a statement released by Amtrak with nothing coming from NS?

Updated Service Alert from NS re: Newport PA derailment: (http://www.nscorp.com/content/nscorp/en/service-alerts/derailment-near-newport--pa-update.html)"Feb 23, 2021

UpdateAt approximately 6:30 p.m. Monday, February 22, 2021, Norfolk Southern train I0W/21 derailed at Newport, Pennsylvania, approximately 25 miles northwest of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The derailed equipment has now been cleared from both main lines. One main line is estimated to be returned to service at 10:00 p.m., February 23. The other main line is expected to be returned to service late morning, Wednesday, February 24. Customers with traffic moving between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg should anticipate a delay of 24 to 48 hours. NS will provide updates as additional information becomes available..."

A few eastbound trains descended Horseshoe Curve presumably in anticipation of the re-opening of the line (plus there were 2-3 light helper moves):
  • At 2032: eb IM train
  • At 2044 eb IM train
  • At 2113 eb IM train
  • At 2200 wb 1 car local
  • At 0214 eb manifest train
  • At 0436 eb IM train
  • At 0508 eb manifest train on track2 - passed by an eb engine with track panel MoW car with prefabbed turnout on track 3
As of 0452, I have yet to see a westbound road freight on the Curve.

Interestingly a Sperry Rail Car ran up and down the Curve covering all three tracks during the lull in traffic last night - wonder if this was the first time ever that Sperry was able to test all tracks in a 4 hour window?
  • Photo 1: At 1829 wb on track 1
  • Photo 2: At 2325 eb on track 3
  • Photo 3: At 0031 wb on track 2
