CP in Michigan
Author: conrail4022

Well once again it looks like I may have a chance to catch the CP 6644 as HU has it enroute to Albany from Elkhart

Being from out of the area can anyone give me some info on the route/ travel times, etc.. Closest I can catch might be Detroit area.

Looking a a map I'm guessing they run east to Detroit then use trackage rights & CR Shared Assets to go north to Winsor & then over & down to Albany

Or am I completely off base?

Any help appreciated before I make a 5 hour drive for nothing.

Thanks.

Sorry, I didn't see this message earlier. CP runs over the Water Level route from Chicago to Butler, IN where they get on the former Wabash to Delray Tower in Detroit. There is a crew change at Oakwood Yd. in Detroit. I believe that CP owns at least one track from Delray Tower to the Detroit River Tunnels. So I don't believe that CP trains need to use CSAO Detroit at all.

Mostly correct, with some clarification. NS/CN (ex-GTW) share trackage from Delray to West Detroit that CP uses, then CP swings east on CR Shared Assets briefly on ex-NYC tracks headed for the tunnel (and past the MC depot) which actually changes to the CN CASO Sub around 24th St in Detroit. Yes, a little convoluted but the Canadian roads (CP) are the main users of the tunnel and have taken over trackage into the US up to where American roads essentially dominate.

Thnaks guys.

I never really understood the whole Delray vs trains running via CP LOU. I just know I've seen CP Rail trains in both places.

And having sat at Delray I've see CP come from the bridge & around from the CSX.

Not sure if I'm going to be able to get it in the morning - not even sure if it will even be daylight when it goes through - but I am better equipped because of your info!

CP now owns both Detroit River Tunnels outright since October of last year when they bought out their partner Ontario Municipal Employee's Trust.

CP trains get on "Conrail" at Delray. They do not use the NS/CN "Union Belt" trackage between Delray and West Detroit.

Also, CP crews based in Elkhart, Ind. run either to Chicago or Windsor, Ont. CP does not change crews at Oakwood Yard unless they have to dogcatch something there.

Thanks Dave, I wondered about that. Guess that makes it easier to swing east at West Detroit. Sad that I can't remember, but can a train even wye eastward from CN to the MC at West Detroit? Too long since I was anywhere close...

The necessary connection does not exist.
