Are the eastern lines well prepared to step up to help resolve the crisis
that was brought about by the failure of Colonial Pipelines to protect the security of their own computer systems? How much petroleum could be rapidly transported by rail if a similar cirisis happens again? Date: 05/12/21 17:30 Re: Pipeline and Railroads Author: Lackawanna484 There are a lot of newer tank cars in storage.
But, I doubt there are sufficient unloading points in the Linden Woodbridge NJ network to handle all of them. Posted from Android Date: 05/12/21 19:44 Re: Pipeline and Railroads Author: toledopatch Lackawanna484 Wrote:

This is the key: while there is some tank car capacity available, the facilities required to handle finished gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, etc. by rail simply don't exist in the relevant corridors - nor is it likely anyone would spend the money to build and maintain them just as a contingency against future pipeline problems. Not to mention it would take weeks to get the cars out of storage, inspected and moved somewhere they could possibly be loaded. Not to mention the additional time to get them to a destination with fuel. You’d have to be shut down for months before that would be considered a viable option.

Date: 05/13/21 09:55 Re: Pipeline and Railroads Author: TCnR There's reports they went for the ransom payment, here's background but not the actual confirmation:
" Colonial Pipeline has cyber insurance arranged by broker Aon (AON.N), with Lloyd's of London insurers AXA XL (AXAF.PA) and Beazley (BEZG.L) among the underwriters, three sources told Reuters on Thursday. " https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/colonial-pipeline-has-cyber-insurance-policy-sources-2021-05-13/ Date: 05/13/21 10:35 Re: Pipeline and Railroads Author: Lackawanna484 Bloomberg has reported that sources close to the deal say five million dollars was paid.
No confirmation. There are a lot of current and recent municipal and school etc ransom attacks. Even some federal agencies still use a few pre-Y2K systems. That's just asking for trouble... Posted from Android Date: 05/13/21 10:48 Re: Pipeline and Railroads Author: TCnR Yep, the California EED thing is on a pre- Y2K system, yet they have a hige budget surplus this year and often in the past. There were lots of W7 systems out there, I would think they've been upgraded recently. The whole W10 Server thing is far too beleiveable, but then we know what was going on at the top of that budget food chain ( it wasn't just Kermit being green ).

It can be done....but the bouncy exchange rate for cryptomoney makes it a dicey investment....even for criminals.... Date: 05/13/21 18:04 Re: Pipeline and Railroads Author: TCnR There's stories going around that the repair software from the Hackers didn't work very well. Makes me wonder if there's a part 2 Hack, for another 5 Million or so to fix the repair.
In the meantime they've been rebuilding the database from their backup. Just like anybody does when it crashes. |
