"Deep Woods Work Extra"
Author: ut-1

An Adirondack Railroad work train is featured here passing through a rock cut in Big Moose, NY yesterday afternoon.

About 2 hours passed between the northbound and southbound moves. You will note I was videoing in a minor hail storm in the second segment. However, within 10 minutes, the squall ended and sunny skies arrived once again.

Wow, still carrying "New York Central," and it has been a long time.  BTW, where is Big Moose?

My ears! My ears! Seriously, very interesting. I do have questions about what the excavator was doing.

Nice one !

Big Moose is in the Adirondack Mountains of New York in north of Thendara and south of Beaver River on the Utica - Tuppper Lake line that went to Montreal and Lake Placid.

Why the SW-1 ?

I'm told it was primarily used so the conductor wouldn't have to hang on to a gondola during any reverse moves (they set out three cars in Big Moose). The one caboose on the property, nicely restored in Conrail blue, is being used in this fashion now between Snow Jct (Remsen)-Thendara.

BTW, an "industry source" informs me that each gon contained 500 ties and weighed-in at 130 tons.
