Eastern Railroad Discussion > Major NS intermodal derailment near Russell, Alabama todayDate: 08/18/21 21:13 Major NS intermodal derailment near Russell, Alabama today Author: rbx551985 Yes, another NS derailment. Online photos show an awful-looking pileup of containers all over the woods near that Alabama town. Online reports state 3:00 pm today in Russell, AL. Train was NS 219 between Atlanta, GA and Meridian, MS KCS Interchange.

They will be the #1 RR for derailments if they are not already in first place.
Wonder why they can't seem to keep their stupid monster PSR trains on the tracks? Wondering if it has to do with furloughing a trainload of mechanical & maintenance guys? Date: 08/19/21 08:22 Re: Major NS intermodal derailment near Russell, Alabama today Author: cnr6776 Ol' Hunter didn't live long enough to rule the NS, so he wouldn't give a rat's butt about their shareholders.

Date: 08/19/21 21:23 Re: Major NS intermodal derailment near Russell, Alabama today Author: coach Railroads sure lose alot of freight in these derailments. Trucks rarely do (in crashes). It may make customers ask if the intermodal risk is worth it?

How many containers spent a few weeks sideways in the Suez canal? Or in the 200 ships that were delayed? Lots! That being said, it is quite a leap to say that more lading is damaged by the railroad than by trucks. According to FRA data there were 563 mainline derailments in 2019. This compares to 391,721 crashes involving large trucks in the same year (NHTSA data). I do not think lading loss is necessarily a factor driving custoners away from the rail industry. I wonder if logistics companies will stop using ocean ships after that. Date: 08/20/21 19:08 Re: Major NS intermodal derailment near Russell, Alabama today Author: nsrlink > nsrlink Wrote:

Hey that's cute I see what you tried to do there by being snarky. .....Or you could get with reality & know that safety used to be first; now it is fourth. This could have been likely prevented had a high-railer /track inspector patrolled the area before the train went through. But again, NS & all the other RRs have laid off so many mechanical & maintenance people, it seems like they just roll the dice every day & hope the trains don't derail. Anyone who pays casual attention to just the headlines knows derailments & injuries are up on most all of the RRs & that is a direct result of Ponzi Scheme "Railroading." If you worked for a railroad you'd be familiar with their blame game.... it goes something like.... ALL accidents are preventable. ALL exposures can be safeguarded against. ....so if you /they believe that, then this was preventable. Yes, but ranting day in and day out is going to accomplish what exactly? As for the blame game, what makes you think the trucking industry is any different?
