On Monday January 10th, New York, Susquehanna & Western No. 3040 brought its train approximately 4 miles from the road's Utica NY yard to a customer in New Hartford. Unfortunately, No. 3040, a GP40, experienced a breakdown and it remained overnight at Oneida Warehouse, Campion Rd, New Hartford.

I walked on a public sidewalk along the disabled freight Tuesday morning just before 7 AM. The temperature was -2 and the sun was approximately 40 minutes away from its scheduled appearance.

The train is still there this morning; the only other power on the Utica branch now is No. 3618, an SD-45. As far as I know, six-axles are not allowed on the industrial tracks off the Utica main so it's unlikely 3618 will come to 3040's rescue.

If memory serves me right, I believe that quite a few years ago (late 198'0's) they sent a six axle out there. I believe they broke a water main on that trip. Maybe Train1275 will chime in with the details of that incident (or tell me my memory is not so good!)

I recall they did send an SD45 (or more ?) down the old O&W but can't recall details other than it didn't go well.
How much they did it, or if a water main broke, I can't recall.

I can say during my time the last several years as VP-Engineering that the track would not withstand a six axle locomotive. I can't say what has or has not been done of late to the track to know if it could be cleared for a one time rescue move. As the 3618 would not load either I guess it is a moot point by now.
