Eastern Railroad Discussion > Amtrak Four E-unit Consist, a Perfect ABBA Except for PortholesDate: 05/09/22 09:02 Amtrak Four E-unit Consist, a Perfect ABBA Except for Portholes Author: MartyBernard At the Amtrak Engine Facility in Chicago on June 16, 1977. For the 75th anniversary run of the Broadway Limited these four matching E's were used west of Harrisburg
The Amtrak units were: 440 ex-RFP E8A 1012 470 ex-UP E9B 927B 452 ex-Milw E9B 35B 428 ex-UP E9A 955A. Note only one unit has port holes. Edited 3 time(s). Last edit at 05/09/22 10:37 by MartyBernard. I wondered if it could be the former RF&P 1012 because that engine was one of several RF&P E8's that received a second headlight for ACL runthrough interline service in the 60's. I got to work on the 1012 many times before Amtrak got it.

I don't think so ... I seem to remember seeing the Broadway with A-B-B-A E's after that, but I never got them with matching paint. Side panels were made of a laminated steel/wood(?) product and needed to be replaced periodically. Cheaper not to replace the portholes. Also no need for FRA glazing if no windows. Edited 1 time(s). Probably the original RRs did. My understanding it was to reduce maintenance. Marty
