Tuesday May 10, 2022
Vermilion OH
153rd Anniversary of the Golden Spike - 1869

The locomotives finally facing each other on a linkage of rail from the Atlantic to the Pacific and sealed with a golden spike, the greatest engineering work of the age, finished. The echoes of the Anvil Chorus have long since disappeared into the past as we sit trackside and recall those glory days of Hell on Wheels, and contemplate the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad on this date, just watching the parade of modern day trains roll by.  A far cry from 1869, but with much less romance now to my mind.

1 - 3. Train 310 comes along and today he has NS 4191, 4259, 9766 and two SD60E's; NS 6942 and 6953. This makes four SD60E's I have seen this week in these parts, a bit unusual.

4. Towards the tail end the 310 had this N&W hopper. Kinda nice to still see some of the rolling stock of the classic Class 1 railroads.

5. An eastbound rolls by on Track 2 with NS 4032 and UP 2756. ** Train 32N **

6. Uncle Pete, the UP still around since being chartered by the Pacific Rail Act of July 1, 1862. Nice to see UP power here in Ohio on this May 10th.

7. I am not sure what symbol this train was ** (Id'ed as 32N **), but was impressed by the head end being all box cars, "as far as the eye can see".

8. UP 8395 is the DPU, so score two UP's. (sorry I missed the SP auto rack). I wonder what the old Union Pacific guys on the 119 would have thought of this beast.

9. Even though this is Ohio, you might think we are out west, as now BNSF power comes past on an intermodal. Somehow I've never quite "cottoned" to this scheme for some reason. Power is BNSF 8128 and 5530.

10. A nice going away scene of the BNSF power, didn't catch the train symbol on this one either.

11. Not to leave out the NKP side today, we go over to "GC" west of town to catch the 315 rolling into the early evening sun. To the left is the connector for eastbounds out of Bellevue to go over to the Chicago Line, a post Conrail split up affair. GC used to be a control siding point further east towards town. Train 315 here made a good run from Conneaut, more like in the days of the hotshot Berks on the Nickel Plate than recent NS PSR railroading. Power is NS 9799 and 9660.

12. The Chicago Line bridge as seen from the north side about on the old Lake Shore Electric Railway right-of-way. The sun has rolled around in order to get this view lit up now. Power is NS 9621, 9441 and 4083 and the head end is a slew of gons.  ** Train 17N
