Greenspring, WV - abandoned trackage
Author: P

Looking at riding the Potomac Eagle train this summer and was poking around on Google Earth to get the lay of the land.  It looks like that line is also a freight hauler that interchanges with CSX at Greenspring.  At the junction, there are the remnants of some large operation and significant rail trackage - but now is just a ruin.

What was there, and when did it go away?

It was a Koppers railroad tie treating plant.  It closed in 2015.

Yes, it was on the north side of the CSXT Mains and Scale Track.  Gerry

On 4/1/2002, I found NW2 #9575 an x-C&O switcher from 1949, switching the lead track to the Koppers plant off the CSX main about 1/2 mile west of Green Spring, WV. This was shot from a dirt public road that parallels the tracks here.

Indeed. Although the plant was originally built and operated by the B&O. Originally, it contained a maze of narrow-gauge (30 inch) trackage. Koppers began joint operation with the railroad around 1935, and bought the plant outright in 1973.
