CSXT New York City Questions
Author: PRR_4859

Good Evening:

How many trains per day does CSXT run to/from New York City and where do they terminate? Also, while Amtrak maintains and controls the Hudson Line north of Poughkeepsie, NY, does CSXT still own it?

Thank you in advance.

AFAIK, there is one RT per day from Selkirk yard to NYC.   It comes down the hudson line and uses the "Oak Point connector" to get to Oak Point Yard  that is on the Hell Gate Line (NEC), in the bronx.

I believe the connection joins the NEC going north (eastbound), so cars for the LIRR and queens, NY would be handled by a separate job out of Oak Point Yard.

I also think the NECR or some other shortline in connecticut comes down to the LIRR connection via the NEC/Bay Ridge line.

Some one else will know more

G&W's Providence & Worcester operates a triweekly (Sun/Tue/Thu) unit stone train from Cedar Hill Yard/New Haven to Fresh Pond/Queens NY via the New Haven Line, Hell's Gate Bridge, and Fremont Secondary. Return empties departs Fresh Pond early in the eveining on Mon/Wed/Fri. Stone train is interchanged with the New York & Atlantic Railway.

Most CSX trains serving NY Metropolitan Area operate in New Jersey. This includes a number of intermodal trains terminating in North Bergen or South Kearny, with trailers and containers being drayed into New York City. A good place to watch CSX in nearby New Jersey is at the old Ridgefield Park train statoin.

A few years back there used to be a separte manifest and garbage train daily but its been combined now.  And a decade or so back the CP was also running a manifest but if it had more then a few cars it was considered long.  Anyone know what power they are using now for the NYC manifest as they require the plow to be cut to pass through 3rd rail territory.  They had a handful of SD60 as the last loco's I recall.

I161 still runs.  It originates out of Syracuse.

Thank you for the information and CSXT train schedule. Does NS run as many trains to North Jersey?

Thank you again.

NS run fewer trains since they have only one primary route into the area compared to CSX's three.  This results in CSX having a good handful of run-through trains whereas all NS traffic is originating / terminating.  But when you compare just CSX's NY/NJ originating / terminating traffic, it has a similar count to NS'.  With that said, the NS Lehigh Line averages about 20 road trains per 24-hrs.  The following are all the scheduled trains.

11N Newark Doremus Ave, NJ - Detroit North Yard, MI daily
18G Allentown, PA - Croxton, NJ daily
18N Conway, PA - Newark Doremus Ave, NJ daily
19G Croxton, NJ - Enola, PA daily
20E Chicago 63rd St, IL - Croxton, NJ daily
20K Chicago 63rd St, IL - Croxton, NJ daily
20R Chicago Landers, IL - GCT Bayonne, NJ Mo-Sa
20W Chicago Ashland Ave, IL (BNSF Z LACNYC) - Croxton, NJ Fr-Tu
21M Croxton, NJ - Chicago 63rd St, IL daily
211 Croxton, NJ - Atlanta, GA Tu-Su
212 Atlanta, GA - Croxton, NJ Tu-Su
22V Harrisburg, PA - Elizabeth Marine, NJ Tu
23M Port Newark, NJ - Chicago Global 2, IL (UP) daily
23Z Croxton, NJ - Harrisburg, PA daily
25V GCT Bayonne, NJ - Chicago Landers, IL Su-Fr
25W Croxton, NJ - Chicago 63rd St, IL Su
25Z Erail, NJ - Chicago 47th St, IL Mo-Sa
294 Chicago 47th St, IL - Erail, NJ daily

Plus they see about 2 unit trash and 2 ethanol trains per day.

I believe CSX still owns from North of Poughkeepsie (mp 75.8) to Hoffmans (CP 169). It is leased by Amtrak.

The "New Yorker" fleet, as they are called in Selkirk, is now made up of AC4400s in the ~460-490 road number range. They all have modified plows & all the appropriate cab signal / PTC hardware. The SD40-2s previously on this assignment have been reassigned and the SD60Ms have been retired.

Thanks for that info.  Selkirk used to have a few specialized groups of locomotives. The notched plow units for third rail country, the C30-7A units for the Boston & Albany trains, etc.  I think Conrail  had U28C power for the humps, but I may be mistaken.

PC bought U23C's for Selkirk hump and yard service.

I lived in the bronx overlooking the Hudson near 207th st and the Harlem River, overlooking the tracks.

There was a daily Flexivan train to Highbridge that usually ran with a pair of E-8's (I guess it was a mail train) , and a daily freight that ran to Oak Point with a pair of GP-40's.

There was still freight to 72nd st yard in manhattan at the time.  I daily RT to selkirk, that ran with U25's/U28's.  The few local switch engines at the time were RS-3's and RS-3m's.

The 72nd street yard of the New York Central eventually became a long stretch of glitzy, very expensive high rise buildings.  Lots of lawsuits and years of litigation.
