Watching the Corn Grow and Other Adventures in Lake Erie Land
Author: train1275

Saturday August 13, 2022

A slow Saturday here in Lake Erie Land. Made the trip down to the Big Four (CSX) in Wellington, OH, and then over to Bellevue and back to Vermilion.

1. CSX 3161 and 236 roll west on the Big Four near Wellington, OH. In the background are the home signals for the Wheeling & Lake Erie crossing. Lots of garbage up front.

2. The 2nd unit is CSX 236. Note the high class number board, and then look at the mis-matched number boards on leader 3161.

3. CSX 775 is the DPU.

4 - 5.  And then we see a Big Four eastbound with CSX 3271 leading 5472 sweeping around the curve at Jones Road, Wellington, OH.

6. This is an intermodal and has a variety of containers like this XPO.

7 - 8. C.H. Robinson, containers we don't seem to see on the NS, and a mix of other containers through the Ohio cornfields.

9. Speaking of corn, it is doing well this year, and so with the passing of the last train we ...... sit back and watch it grow  .... and grow ...... and then decide to move on.

10. Hartland, OH west of Wellington is a base for the Wheeling & Lake Erie RR operations. Nothing going on here today as WLE 7005, 7028 and 7021 enjoy their down time.

11. Further west at Bellevue, once the Citadel of Steam for the Nickel Plate RR, the birds are chirping and a gentle summer breeze is blowing as all is still, so time to head north.  While crossing the heart of the yard on Route 4, the slug set is seen; NS 6182, 869 and 6151.

12. Heading back home we catch, unexpectedly, Train 316 which must have eluded us at Bellevue. He has NS 9769 and 8017 and a very, very long train as seen here at the Route 60 crossing in Vermilion, former site of the NKP depot.

13. & 14.

It is always nice to see "heritage equipment" such as these SSW (Southern Pacific) Auto Racks. Two in this train no less !
SSW 80614 and 80529 are a pleasing site.

And that ends the slow and quiet escapade today.
