Western Maryland Locomotive News - 17 September 2022
Author: DTWilson

1) Carbody of WM Alco FA #303 still remains in Allegany County, MD. The FA, I'm told needs to be lightened and another trailer is coming next week so the locomotive can continue it's journey to the midwest. Pictured here the #303 at rest in the yard of Belt Construction in Bowling Green, MD on Saturday the 17th. In the background CSX train L135-17 heads west on the Mountain Sub.

2) Western Maryland Scenic RR's GP30 #501 shoves WM / PNL SD40 #7471 on the Interchange Track at Cumberland, MD. The big SD has been leased to the Steam Railroading Institute (SRI) in Michigan. (Press Release on the SRI website about diesels substituting for the PM #1225 on this years Polar Express Trains.

3) #7471 on the Interchange Track at Cumberland, MD as the WMSR $502 crosses back over the Potomac River into Ridgeley, WV

What is the heritage of the FA, and where exactly is it going?

The Alco FA is original to the Western Maryland Railway. They had Four (4) FA's and they all went to the Long Island RR.
301 was lost to a wreck on the LIRR, 302 still exists in WV, 303 is in MD, 304 lost it's cab in a conversion on the LIRR and later the converted power car was scrapped....

The 303 is going to the Midwest, final destination is not known by me.
