Aberdeen, Carolina & Western Office Car Train with F units
Author: RailRyder

Here are a few shots I was able to get on Saturday, September 17 of the Aberdeen, Carolina & Western office car train as it deadheaded from their operating headquarters in Candor, NC to Charlotte, NC, one-way. It is rumored that the train will return to Candor this coming Friday.

Here are a few more shots. Perhaps their next trip will feature one of the E units!

Really nice shots Jim. I'll be in the area next Friday, by pure luck. Would be nice to know when the return trip happens and if they return with the SD or the F on the point headed east. Thanks!   Baltimore

Thanks for posting these great shots Jim.  Love the last one with the NoDa condos.

You might be in luck. Rumor is train will come back to Candor on Friday or Saturday.  We shall see,  Additionally, there is also yet another E9 salvaged from Iowa Pacific and an E8B body and frame but converted to 4 axle trucks in tattered Alaska paint (was a HEP car for ARR I believe) inbound from NS in Charlotte along with Minzes Vista dome that just came back in from Amtrak.  All of that could possibly join the party train to maybe run as a single special train back to Candor.  .

Sad thing is those two items were in tow on a soutbound 153 from Linwood to Charlotte over a week ago.  That train stopped & picked up n Charlotte, but didn't set those 2 items off.  Too bad, but that's Precision Scheduled Railroading (or incompetence?) I guess.

Didn't they recently acquire an ex-MILW Skytop Lounge? Where is it now?

It's inside the shop at Candor.  They also picked a full length Superdome which is also in Candor, and a former Southern Pacific dome that is still out in Colorado waiting to ship east.

They have quite the impressive collection - in addition to the train shown in original post and the Menzies Vista, they have a couple restored heavy weight business cars and a stainless ex PRR Twin-Diner set, all restored and in ACWR colors.  The Superdome is fully lettered for them them with their logos, but remains in the former Iowa Pacific IC inspired paint.  The Skytop is in shop being worked on.  The E9 that was in WSOR Red and Silver is in paint booth and should emerge soon in similar scheme to the Fs.  The IC painted (gray/black) E9 is outside paint booth and is probably next in.  Assume the A/B that just came in will follow soon.   Have a couple more Fs, and more passenger cars squirreled in storage unrestored as well.

Looks like I may have to plan a trip to my old '80s Carolina stomping grounds!

One wonder just how much passenger equipment they can realistically use... and what will happen to it when, inevitably, new management or new ownership decides that they don't need so much. Menzies is in his late 70s.

This would make a nice hospitality ride and tent for the Masters Tournament.

Tre cars are already used for various tournaments and events at the Pinehurst Resort.  Now that #2 Pinehurst is a permanent host course for the US Open starting in 2024 then every 5th year, it'll get more use along with the growing fleet. ACWR's main runs thru the resort, seperatmg courses 1,2, and 4 from 3 and 5, and runs in view of the 18th green of the fabled #2 Pinehurst.  The USGA is building their new Golfhouse Pinehurst immediately next to the ACWR - this will be the USGA offices, equipment and turf lab and testing facility, relocating from NJ, plus the World Golf Hall of Fame relocating from FL.   ACWR already has a single ended 8 or so car long siding here, complete with "hotel power" for passenger cars, that is used to host the passenger fleet and visiting PVs and Office Cars. They recently have embarked on an expansion project to add a long double ended siding where cars can be parked with an unobstructed view of "The Craddle" and the 18th green of #2.  Utility work is under way for this and track material is being accumulated.
