Trip planning thorugh southern Ohio Shortline Info request
Author: NB1001

I am thinking of taking a trip next month crossing Southern Ohio. Four shortline operations have caught my attention. They are the Belpre Industrial Railroad (Parkersburg WV to Marietta OH and beyond). the Ohio South Central (based in Hamden), Cincinnati Eastern (runs from Marriette OH to Pebbles) and the Indiana Southern (runs south from Liberty IN to Fernald OH which is north of Cincinnati). Does anyone know anything about their operational patterns and/or where they keep their power.  Also while in Parkersburg, does anyone know if the Little Kanawha Railroad is accessible?
Thanks.

I have heard from several souces that the Belpre Industrial Parkersburg railroad runs most days of the week (often including at least one day on the weekend), and that it's best to be there early in the morning (e.g., 0500) to keep up with their activities.

The railroad that goes into Fernald,Ohio is the Indiana Eastern, not the Indiana Southern.

The Cincinnati location from which the Cincinnati Eastern runs is Mariemont, not "Marriette", and its east end is near Peebles. They have a website at cinrail.com.

The IERR and Ohio South Central are under common ownership with the office also being in Liberty, Indiana.

Indiana Eastern is M-F traffic is sparse crew goes on duty around 800-830am. Power is a ex NS GP38-2 high hood with a fully painted AWW SD9 # 206 as back up.
Ohio South Central is based at Hamden, OH  in service power is 3 or 4 older first generation geeps. Also a M-F operation they can basically go three different directions based on customer needs.

Indiana Eastern seems to run south tuesday,Thursday, to Fernald from Cottage Grove. Crew normally on duty 8-830 range I caught them last month and they went south around 11am. Ohio south central starts rolling early 0700-0730 at their shops in Hamden Ohio. Last month they went to Vauces Ohio to interchange with csx Tuesday/Thursday. Caught them going to Jackson on Wednesday last month some decent spots but a bunch of tree tunnels. If they cut onto the branch they will go out to the chemical company at the end of the line east of town. Company personnel cannot give out information. If you get to Hamden wait and see the power leave and they will go out to the wye to switch. Once complete then you can figure out which way they are going, we waited at the grade crossing to the south. Hope this helps you,
Randy Allard

You can usually find something of Cincinnati Eastern’s at their stone terminal at 880 Roundbottom Road, Milford OH. Multiple grades of aggregates are unloaded on a mainline pit for hoppers, covered hoppers, and gondolas. Most days there will be cars there unloading with at least one engine on hand to index cars. Ohio Mulch is building a new facility next door at 850 Roundbottom. Will be tracks going into that facility, probably sometime next year, that will result in changes. To how stone is unloaded as well.

You can generally find one or two crews working between Clare yard and Batavia Monday thru Friday, on duty 0800. East of Batavia is USUALLY out one day, back two days later. Days of operation vary and can include Saturday and Sunday. Train takes empty cars to quarry, loads, and returns with loads of stone. Works enroute customers as needed each way - scrap yard in Macon, elevator in Winchester, lumber company in Peebles, plus storage cars at various sidings. Most work is done eastbound, then entire train is run around in Peebles, and shoved out to quarry in Plum Run. Once loaded, train returns west. 30 car cut take 6-8 hours to load as it’s loaded with front end loaders, not belts.

Shop work takes place in Sardinia OH inside the wye. Several locos can always be found there.

For the Liberty, IN information, I cited the two railroads' joint website. It may be that the "head office" and the operational office are in different places.

Cottage Grove IN in an unincorporated wide spot in the road 5 miles outside Liberty IN who’s mailing address is Liberty. Indiana Eastern /Ohio Southern offices are in a house on US 27 near the Diamond.

Cincinnati Eastern, New Castle Southern, Homestead Rail Group general offices are in a storefront on W Union St on the square in downtown Liberty, across from the courthouse and about 2 blocks from the old B&O depot.

The two companies (IERR and CCET) are NOT related. Just coincidence they are based 5 miles apart.
