Penn Central Leads Again in Lake Erie Land

Friday September 23, 2022
Vermilion, OH

On this date in 1969 the film Butch Cassidy and and the Sundance Kid had its world premiere.

The trusty old Canon has been giving me a few problems of late, and today I went out and it was dead and more useless than a boat anchor. Had to pull out the cell phone.
At lunch time, caught the 316 and several other trains and it worked after a battery changeout, but something is wrong.

1. The Penn Central Heritage Unit was leading Train 28M on this sunny but chill day and we see it here leading the NS 9526 and 9869. A railfan from Harrisburg also enjoys the action. - cell phone image.

2. Down at the docks we catch the 309 which originated in East Binghamton, NY. He has UP 5578, 6947, 8862 and NS Operation Lifesaver 5669, - cell phone image

3. A going away of the 309 with UP 8862 and the 5669. NS 5669 is a GP38-2 built as SOUTHERN 2860 in August 1971. - cell phone image

4. The 316 is caught in Fall light on the NKP bridge running for Conneaut. He has NS 7674, 9551 and 3270.

5. SD40-2 3270 was built as a long hood forward, high short hood unit for SOUTHERN as #3270 in January 1978. This unit was supposed to be set off at Sheffield, up ahead before Cleveland.

6. I believe this was 17N which usually comes by here on Track 2 in order to take the connector to the NKP for Bellevue, but today he is on Track 1 for Sandusky. In another surprise I heard Train 258 which normally is a Chicago Line train coming off the NKP for some reason. Power on 17N is NS 4143, 1216 and 1042.

7. Now comes counterpart to our earlier Train 309, this is Train 310 coming in from Elkhart, IN. He has NS 7594 and 4212 on the head end.

8. It is always neat to see these Guilford / MEC box cars. This is obviously an mty with an open door, MEC 20063.

9. 310 has DP power today; NS 8140 and BNSF 7502 mid-train.

10. And final shot is SSW 80614 with an SP autorack, also on the 310. We started with a heritage in this series and end with a heritage.

Great images.
I pretty much parked my Canon digital SLR and a nice point and shoot digital after my son gave me his "old" Pixel 3 XL cell phone. I dropped my cell phone on our concrete front porch, from a ladder putting up Christmas lights, maybe three years ago, end of story for the my old phone. He was upgrading and I got his "old" cell phone. Whatever the pix from his "old" Pixel 3 XL I'm using are far better than the images from the Canon DSLR or any other camera, film or digital I ever owned. I'm not sure investing in newer DSLRs is warrented. It has also been said that the newer point and shoot cameras are surpassing DSLR. I'm no professional, just passing along my experience.
Whatever you do, please keep posting this great stuff from Vermilion. I enjoy it. I also enjoyed the older upstate NY stuff, kind of miss it.

Those Guilford/MEC/BM cars now belong to CSX.  I would not be surprised of they start showing up re-stenciled CSXT before long, or start showing up regularly in CSX manifest trains.
