Conrail and Lackawanna in Lake Erie Land - September 26th
Author: train1275

September 26, 2022
Vermilion, OH

The first televised U.S. Presidential debate occured on this date in 1960 between V.P. Richard Nixon and Senator John F. Kennedy.

Both the Conrail Heritage and the DL&W Heritage units were on Train 27P this morning, westbound through Vermilion, OH.

1. - 3. NS 8098 Conrail, NS 4546 and NS 1074 (Lackawanna) roll a short 27P intermodal through town in fall lighting. The sun had not gotten around to get the shadow off the nose, but I did the best I could. He was really making tracks !

4. - 6. Watching the 27P by with Conrail and Lackawanna. The Lackawanna paint is reminiscent of that time in September 1960 during the Nixon - Kennedy debates when the DL&W was in the final days before the October 17, 1960 merger with the Erie; forming the Erie Lackawanna, a bit rough.

7. Other action this morning was not as exciting, but a few images just the same. NS 8119 leads NS 7677 and 4140 on Train 258.

8. NS 982569 Scale Test Car in Train 258.

9. Train 15N out of Conway comes by with NS 8005 leading NS 1052 and mid-train NS 7518 as a DPU. He was a pretty long one and I'm not sure about the laws of physics and those two mty flats up front.

10. A fellow railfan gets in on the action as the L15 comes through heading to Sandusky from Maple Heights. He still has his long time regular trustworthy units; NS 7500 and 9467.

11. And high overhead is the 28M with NS 4150, 3671 and 8095 ending the morning shoot and signifying it is time for lunch.

Nice bunch, you can almost imagine the first shot was taken in 1978 with CR/PC/EL units! Well, except for the loco model...

I like the 8098 images, capturing the beauty of conrail in essence, can opener and all.....

saturdays Q403 had 2 "original" conrail boxcars in it's consist which was really nice to go with the LTEX amtrak engine third out in the consist

Thank you for the heads up on 27P.  Worked out so well in Gypsum, Ohio for me and getting the NS 8098. My few pics are up.

Interesting old Conrail quips. I really miss all the Conrail predecessors. I found it amazing the Conrail Heritage Unit showed up very shortly after the last Conrail unit was repainted into its new owners paint. I thought it was idiosynchric as it was precisely timed for the last Conrail repaint.

I never thought I'd miss Conrail Blue.

Alas!

Nice pics!!

Having empty flats, lumber cars, etc. up front can be a real pain to say the least.....
