North Shore RR info please
Author: Pattenburg

On Friday (Nov 18th) I will be in Northumberland, Pennsylvania and was hoping to photograph the North Shore RR. Not being familiar with their operations, I was hoping that someone could provide some information about their operations. Thanks for any info provided.

In the past they have been very friendly in the office in Northumberland. That was before cell phones hopefully it is still that way.

The trick is to find the train. Once you find the train, following is relatively easy. One strategy is to wait for the train at Danville by the high school. Betweeen Danville and Northumberland, sometimes the tracks are visible from the highway. At other times not. Because the tracks directly next to the river between Northumberland and Danville, there are extremely few crossings and it runs in a tree tunnel. It is possible to miss the train in this stretch.
Sometimes the train goes all the way to Berwick. Other times, it does not venture east of Bloomsburg. It usually does switching in Bloomsburg, could be an hour or more. If chasing, make sure train is continuing east to Berwick instead of returning to Northumberland.

You might also ask them about the Shamokin Valley's times, and about NS's Norry local and Binghamton trains.

Typically 5 days a week out of Northumberland; they can run crews over to the "original" North Shore, one day a week on the Shamokin, and a couple times a week on the Union County Industrial and the new Kraemer line they picked up from NS.  Listen to the NS radio channels as well as the NSHR channels.
