Eastern Railroad Discussion > CP 230 involved in crossing incident on NS Chicago line

About 30 minutes after CP 230 departed eastbound from Elkhart on the NS Chicago line, it experienced a vehicle strike 9 miles further east in Goshen IN at about 0530 Wednesday 11/16/22. CP 230 and wb NS 267 are both stopped in the area as of 0540. The good news is apparently there were no injuries.

Why can't auto drivers keep their junk off of the RR tracks?
What do they do, drive onto the tracks, park it, then walk off?

The state  ought to seize their driver's license & prohibit driving privileges for a year..
And, if I was in the auto insurance industry, I'd refuse to honor any claims 
by the vehicle owner(s).  

You shouldn't be able abandon your car on the tracks,
and then get a replacement!

How about calm down and explain where in the original post it says the vehicle was abandoned.

sounds stolen?  kids kicks?

local kids here some years ago put a couch on the tracks in an area not easily acessable and lit it. A CP Rail train ran over it stopping after the locos went over it and the debris was burning under a freight car. That could have been disasterous if burning debris got caught under a loco or a flammable tank car.
The crew was far from amused.

Are you saying it was occupied, when it got smacked?
The vehicle on the tracks was either occupied or it wasn't.

If unoccupied and left on the tracks, to me it was abandoned !!

So you posted a rant without knowing the facts of the incident. Sounds ignorant to me. No proof that the car was intentionally stopped on the tracks and left so the owner could get a new one. That is your fantasy with no facts available to support your speculation.

Ok ... hypothetical (since details are unavailable) how long does the vehicle have to be unoccupied to be abandoned? If a driver goes off the edge of a crossing and gets stuck do they need to stay in their vehicle and get hit to make you happy? Or if they got out seconds before the train hit the car would you consider it unoccupied and abandoned and apply your rant? Where is the line?

The appropriate thing to do when a vehicle gets stuck on a railroad track is to GET OUT of the vehicle and call the emergency number posted at the crossing. Not stay in the car until the train strikes to make some guy on the Internet (you) happy.
