UP units on NS
Author: shadetree

Seems like lately they are everywhere.  Does UP owe NS that many horsepower hours or is there something else going on?

UP and NS have a lot of joint business together, so they each have each others Power on their trains a lot more than others. Been this way for years.

But I’m sure there is a lot of HP hours owed too.

Railroads only worry about 'net' horsepower hoursm owed, correct?

From watching the Elkhart cam each day, I see there's plenty of BNSF locomotives powering NS trains, too.

Us old remember when you could tell which railroad you were looking at by the name on the locos and cabooses. That was then, this is now. Just a big jumble .

From what I can tell, you can still tell what railroad is what by looking at the locomotives. They all have their names on the sides, just like “the old days.”

So an NS lead down Cajon Pass is an NS train?

Not necessarily......

Yes, there are a bunch of horsepower hrs owed. On the flip side, there are a bunch of black horses out west.....

Considering that the NS doesn't run down Cajon Pass I'd say the fact that it's either UP or BNSF
would be a good bet regardless of the lead unit. With UP dropping the cab signal requirement it
could actually be a UP train.
