Old Man Winter Returns to North Central Ohio
Author: train1275

Sunday January 22, 2023

Very snowy today with temps around 32 degrees.
Lots of action to catch.

1. Intermodal Train 28B is eastbound this morning caught at KM, east of Vermilion, OH. Power is BNSF 6970 and NS 9075. It is good to see the intermodals back on NKP Rails.

2. Over to the Chicago Line is 16G coming through Vermilion with NS 8129 and 7599.

3. Green BN 461733 hopper gives a retro look to the 16G.

4. Also on 16G was this single car of new John Deere tractors on OTTX 97216.

5. & 6. Back on the NKP west of Vermilion at Stanley Road is the 11Q highballing for Bellevue with NS 4155 and 7664.

7. Moving on to Huron, OH on the Chicago Line we catch the 22X with NS 1077, 4458 and 8168 rocking and rolling eastbound with a friendly crew.

8. A short ways behind him is the 28M with NS 8161 and 4491. I had this guy in the view finder and just as I went to trip the shutter the auto focus flipped out so I had to quickly recalibrate and he got away from me a little.

9.  Now moving back to the NKP at GC on the west side of Vermilion we get the 315 returning to Bellevue from Conneaut on a straight through NKP route. This train came a little earlier than expected, and this shot was done on almost a dead run. Power is BNSF 6995 and NS 1039. The connector to the Chicago Line east is to the left.

11. Another surprise is the 23G hammering through the white stuff as seen from the dead end of Washington Street in Vermilion. Power is NS 7519, 9770, 4124, 9906 and 7606. Lots of power ! Lots of snow !!

12. Moving over to the Rail Park off Main Street and here comes the L15 with the usual NS 4077 and 4053.

13. NS 4053, 2nd unit on the L15 swirling up the snow.

14. The trains keep coming, this one is 35N with NS 4108 and UP 5380 passing the Vermilion depot with a dimension car head out.

15. Here is the dimension load KRL 340320. It's a whatcha-macallit !!

The load in image 15 looks to me to be a core for a large substation or generating station
transformer.

Be Well,

It does look like a XFMR core. I've worked plenty of XFMR designs but about 100 times smaller! I also worked some unusual designs where the core was cut in the middle and turned 90 degrees. It was called a "paraformer". One side held primary windings, the other half "control" windings that controlled the passage of voltage and amperage throught the primary windings, totally at a loss to me how but this alleviated brownouts in hospitals in the Seventies and apparently it worked as sales were brisk.
