Nice Day in Lake Erie Land - Hapag-Lloyd Unit
Author: train1275

Tuesday January 24, 2024
Vermilion, OH

Sunny for a change, but that made the shadows and harsh light all the more difficult. Some photographers are never happy ....
Some interesting action today.

1. & 2. On the Nickel Plate at 10:17 am this morning, we see what I think is the first Train 29P (former 205) back over the Plate since last year. Power is UP 4108 and 6368, first seen as they are ducking under the NS Chicago Line and Vermilion Road in the far distance, then climbing out of the sag of the Vermilion River bridge and approaching Douglas Street crossing. They then pass the old stub track that served Shore Lumber, gone now about 40 years, and will momentarily cross Route 60. Once on the other side of town they will hit the west leg connector and bomb down the Chicago Line for Toledo and Chicago.

3. This afternoon over on the Chicago Line at the docks is a catch of the L15, and a rare reflection in the Vermilion River. Power is still the NS 4077 and 4053.

4. & 5. A nice prize of the day is Train 67X, mty ethanol with NS 7263 leading CP 8781 (Hapag-Lloyd unit) and CP 8606. The sun came out a liitle strong for a split second which is not a good thing when shooting this bright shiny orange locomotive. Lead unit NS 7263 is one of the SD9043Mac's, this one built in June 1996 as Union Pacific 8034. Anyone know how many of these SD9043Mac's are still out there running ? Or is this an SD70ACU ?  I guess it is a good thing I am not ordering parts for it. Can anyone straighten me out ?

6. NS 4566 leads 10N into Fairlane Yard up ahead with what looks to be mty garbage or C&D cars on the head end instead of all autos.

Back over on the Nickel Plate again is the 315 westbound with NS 8166 and 7708. The light looked a little better here than it actually was in reality, but in any case, this is the 2nd NKP line shot of the day.

The Hapaag Unit is great looking! Good catch and almost as bright as the Molten Orange paint on my Ford Fiesta ST.
I suspect those high side hoppers are building debris cars. Good to see some sunlight..

Basically, the 100 former UP and 10 former CEFX Leasing SD90's that NS acquired were all rebuilt with a new EMD SD70ACe style isolated cab, AAR-style control stand, electrical cabinet with Mitsubishi electronics, additional weight was added to a total of 420,00 or 432,000 pounds, new computer controlled braking system, cab signaling, PTC and LSL (Locomotive Speed Limiter) equipment were added.

There are 45 ACUs left on the roster. 11 are in storage for various reasons......
