The hump was shutdown when the PSR craze took over the NS, I believe that was 2019. It has since been partially reopened for flat shifting.

Google Satellite shows the yard virtually empty...

Google image is old. There's plenty of cars there now.

Intent after PSR was to use Greensboro and Charlotte for switching, but neither of those yards is large and they can't hold a PSR-sized train without doubling.

Has increased use of Linwood Yard resulted in more Knoxville to Linwood traffic via Asheville?

There's still no regular through traffic on the Asheville District.  Only locals and sporadic extras or reroutes.

The only thing through Asheville is a 136 from Knoxville TN, but it doesn't actually go through.  It runs on Tuesday -Friday and Sunday.  Off on Sat and Mon.
A return 135 runs back to Knoxville on Mon, Wed-Sat.leaving Asheville 5ish in the morning.  136 arrives usually late morning in Asheville.  They meet out around Newport or Leadvale TN.
A lot of the traffic is for the paper mill in Canton NC served by Blue Ridge Southern.  NS runs a local P87 M-F to Bridgewater (east of Marion NC) to serve some businesses between Asheville and
Bridgewater.  At Bridgewater is a chip mill where they pick up chip for the Canton mill.   In the evening using the same P87 power they run another trian to Hickory as a P60.
There is a bulk unload location by the East Yard in Asheville that does pretty good.  Usually 20+ covered hoppers in there at a time.  Yard job P89 usually switches cars a couple times a week.
They also take covered hoppers up the old Craggy Branch to Silverline Plastics, witch is a PVC pipe manufacturer.  Maybe once or twice a month NS will run a bulk empty through, but that is really rare!
Don't know why they don't run more this way.  We used to have quite a bit of traffic, but not anymore!!  Some of the 136 traffic may go on through east on P60 to Hickory, and then on further east, but don't know for sure.
No through trains, but long distance locals coming and going.
A few years ago NS spent a LOT of money rebuilding the track east of Asheville, especially down the "Old Fort Loops".  Also just last week they had a rail trail come in and heard they dropped rail west
on the River Line towards Knoxville. There is a MOW crew in town now working on putting the new rail in.
Also most of the sidings between Asheville and Knoxville are jamed with storage cars, so the aren't of any use.  There are some stored center beams in the yard, that have been there for a while.
Oh well!!     Mike
