Are these UP SD70Ms retired & going for rehab?
Author: JPB

I listened to the NS radio around Elkhart this AM 3/12/23 but I don't recall the train symbol of this manifest exiting the east end of Elkhart Yard. But I do recall a brief convo between crew and dispatcher about a suspected H&W in their train's consist in reality being an "old locomotive". These UP SD70Ms (circa 2001) are snow covered so I'm guessing they haven't run in a awhile and are DIT. Would these units be going to some regional/short line via a reman outfit?

Yes, UP 4379 was a lease return in February. UP 4670 was retired in January.

Per the Indiana Northeastern discussion thread on the Michigan forum of Railroadfan.com, these two units arrived on the propert on 3/14/23. Apparently big power is needed to move unit grain train to NS interchange.

Thanks for the pointer!
