Eastern Railroad Discussion > CN empty grain train with a solo C40-8Date: 03/20/23 15:19 CN empty grain train with a solo C40-8 Author: bodkin6071 Sometime yesterday afternoon I had heard a report of a empty CN grain train, G893, with a lone C40-8 #2131 for power out of Memphis, bound for Gilman, IL. As it wouldn't be for a few hours before it would arrive into southern Illinois, I decided to see how far south I could go before catching it. Eventually I wound up 35 miles south of Carbondale in the unincorporated community of Wetaug, IL and intercepting the train there. Not ready to call it quits I decided to chase G893 home and get it two more times at the sweeping curve at Balcom, just south of Anna, and the village of Makanda, just south of Carbondale.

Okay, I confess, I never heard of Balcom until this post but it is a great place to to catch some action considering your results.
Now if someone could just catch a train at Zzyzx, California. I want to buy a vowel! That may be challenging, maybe just maybe, a Borax 20 mule team may have passed here, south end of Death Valley, but I doubt it. Believe this! A dearly departed friend used the alias "Shirley Zzyzx" to have porn sent to a P.O. Box to foil his wife from knowing of his "hobby". Now if I could just get to Balcom... There are some 44 feet per mile grades in the area for northbounds.
Balcom is a good location for photographing northbounds if the lighting cooperates. Pretty sure Mary McPherson captured an image of the day here a few years ago.
