60,000 pounds of ammonium nitrate missing
Author: bluesboyst

I am reading an article someone sent me about 60,000 pounds of ammonium nitrate missing from rail car shipped from Wyoming to California last month.  Has anyone heard of this or is it BS?

That story is utter clickbait. You have to read quite deep into it to find out that the overwhelming likelihood is that the ammonium nitrate leaked from a defective or improperly closed hopper gate. The way it's written, one might think the entire 30 tons disappeared all at once, as if in some sort of packaging.

Thats about the amount found in one pocket. The overwhelming likelihood is the gate on the bottom of that part of the hopper was defective as it leaked out enroute.

So there should be some good grass growth along the mainline somewhere.

Some grey powder leaked along Main 2 on the NS Reading Line a few weeks ago.

The ties are grey as are the space between the rails at paved crossings.

I know the leak stretched at least from Macungie west to Blandon, PA, but I suspect it’s gone much further.

I short, I could completely see a slow leak dumping powder like that over a long distance.

A typical load of Ammonium Nitrate would be 200,000 pounds.
