Eastern Railroad Discussion > Reading and Northern, DL, Steamtown - 9/1 & 2Date: 09/09/23 17:02 Reading and Northern, DL, Steamtown - 9/1 & 2 Author: sscannella A few pics from a short pre-Labor Day trip to Scranton. Friday evening, 9/1, the Carbondale Line crew tied down the 405 and 2461 and train at the former D&H Green Ridge Yard (where the new Von Storch engine house now sits).
The Saturday crew then added some box cars from Valley Distributing in South side before dragging everything into downtown Scranton Yard (Steamtown's home) to take over the NS's Taylor Yard for interchange. GP38-2 has been painted in a modified scheme to celebrate the Reading and Northern's 40th Anniversary. I also caught them crossing McAlpine St in Avoca shortly after their departure.

Steamtown was also running an excursion train out of Scranton to Gouldsboro on the old Lackawanna Line. If you look closely at the DL&W-painted F unit, you can see it's flying black flags in memoriam of Mike Del Vecchio, the former editor of Railfan and RailRoad magazine in the lat-1980's to mid-1990's, who passed away from cancer two days earlier. AS many know, Mike also had a short stint at Railway Age, worked on the Morristown and Erie, and was well-know for his preservation efforts and love for the DL&W. A major loss to all of us. I opted for one shot at Miller's Crossing near Molino to avoid the chase crowds and craziness which usually clogs the roads of eastern PA when this beauty runs. It worked out well as the farmer had corn planted this year, limiting the photo angle there and number of photographers that can be accommodated at this location. Being the early bird paid off.
